"Because of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏÂÛ̳, I am confident in my abilities at the University of Oxford" – Elize Davila, BA'24

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏÂÛ̳ Alumna Elize Davila at Oxford

Elize Davila, BA'24, graduated from St. Thomas feeling confident and prepared to take on her next challenge — a Master of Studies in World Literatures in English at the University of Oxford.

Davila, who completed an Honours in English Language and Literature and a major in Catholic Studies, credits Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏÂÛ̳'s supportive community, the guidance of her professors, and the quality of her education for preparing her to study at the prestigious institution.

"Because of my undergraduate experiences in the classroom, I am comfortable and confident to engage in the classrooms of Oxford," said Davila.

"I don't compare myself to others thanks to the confidence instilled in me by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏÂÛ̳ professors who encourage their students to believe in their abilities."

While at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏÂÛ̳, Davila took advantage of opportunities to get involved, working with Residence Life and IT Services, performing with Black Box Productions, being a founding member and later coordinator of Black Box Labs, and participating in Campus Ministry initiatives and Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏÂÛ̳’s International Students’ Association.

After Oxford, Davila plans to explore her interests in publishing or teaching while taking time to focus on her creative writing part-time.

Worcester College Dr. Peter Helps Scholarship Recipient

To help with her studies at Oxford, Davila was awarded the Dr. Peter Helps Scholarship for Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago from Worcester College.

"The Scholarship meant a lot to me as it meant there are people working to ensure that voices from these two countries have a place in Oxford. It gave me a sense of responsibility to work hard and always keep my country in mind."
